Federal mandate to help disabled in theaters

KIMT News 3- As of January 17th, some of your local theaters will be showing the latest flick as well as accommodating those with disabilities, thanks to a federal mandate.

The regulation would mean theaters would have to have closed captioning and audio description at each seat on all digital movies.

Those in the movie industry say the changes will cost them money, but it is good to get clarity on what is going to expected of them.

“When you have rules out there that are open for interruption, they’re also open to terms of enforcement,” says Aaron Donaldson, the Owner of Lake Theatre in Clear Lake. “It’s nice to have a very defined, you have “X” amount of screens, you’re expected to have “x” amount of devices in your theater.”

Theaters are expected to be in compliance by June of 2018.
