UPDATE: The Belmond Fire Department has now identified the people affected by Monday’s explosion and fire as Bob and Kathy Vierkant. Fire Chief Dean Adcock says the family told him that Bob Vierkant suffered burns to 60% of his body.

BELMOND, Iowa – One person was injured after an explosion and fire Monday in Wright County.
The Belmond Fire Department was called to 1288 Taylor Avenue at around 4:50 pm. They arrived to find a propane gas explosion in the basement had started a fire. Fire Chief Dean Adcock says the flames were largely contained to the basement but the force of the blast pushed out some cement foundation blocks and an above ground wall.
A husband and wife were at the home when the explosion occurred. The husband was in the basement and suffered burns. His wife took him to Iowa Specialty Hospital in Belmond and the man was then transported to University Hospitals in Iowa City for treatment. Their names have not been released.
Firefighters from Belmond, Goodell and Clarion fire departments remained on the scene for about 3 and ½ hours. The ground floor of the one-story home sustained significant smoke and water damage.
The cause of the explosion has not been determined but there was a propane heating unit in the basement.
