CLEAR LAKE, Iowa- According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, almost half of the U.S. population is taking at least one pharmaceutical medication. One out of every 250 Americans visited the emergency room because of a drug reaction each year in 2013 and 2014.
Mercy Family Pharmacy pharmacist Beth Benesh said part of the issue is patients who don’t read the labels or stick to their doctor’s instructions.
“Diabetic medications, the problem with those is hypoglycemia or where your blood sugar can drop too low if you take too much or if you don’t take it at all, your blood sugars will spike too high causing you to end up in the hospital or a coma even.”
Benesh recommended using liquid antibiotic medication for children and measuring doses with a syringe to avoid giving too much.
